Trump accused of showing dementia symptoms by psychologists

Two clinical psychologists have publicly raised concerns about Donald Trump’s mental fitness after observing what they describe as evidence of cognitive decline. Dr Harry Segal of Cornell University and Dr John Gartner, a former faculty member at Johns Hopkins University Medical School, have pointed specifically to signs of deteriorating psychomotor functioning and behaviours they associate with dementia.
Dr Segal stated that Trump, who is 79 years old, is displaying obvious indicators of diminished mental capacity. He highlighted slowed movements, difficulty finding words, and lapses in coherence during public appearances as key signs of impairment. According to Segal, these are typical and recognisable symptoms of progressive neurocognitive disorders.
Dr Gartner, known for his previous warnings about Trump’s mental stability during his presidency, reinforced the assessment. He argued that the patterns now being observed are consistent with neurological decline rather than isolated mistakes or fatigue. He further suggested that the evidence points to possible dementia and warranted serious attention.
The assessments have been put forward in the context of Trump’s continued role as a central figure in American political life. Both psychologists have stressed that their observations are based on publicly available footage and behaviour rather than private evaluation. They contend that the implications of such indicators are particularly significant given Trump’s influence over millions of supporters and his position as a Republican political leader.
Neither Trump nor his representatives have directly responded to these recent claims. In the past, his camp has dismissed questions about his mental health, portraying them as politically motivated attacks.
The concerns raised by Segal and Gartner are likely to fuel ongoing debates about the fitness of ageing political leaders to hold high office. Given the prominence of Trump in current and future electoral cycles, scrutiny of his health and cognitive capacity is expected to intensify in the months ahead.
